Comment on APS Sentencing
"It is a sad day for all concerned. We regret the Court has made a significant contribution to the criminalization of the education profession. Sentencing the APS educators to serve jail time is unjust and disproportionate. The Court’s pressure on these educators to accept responsibility for the allegations disregards their constitutional rights to innocence and to appeal from the verdict. No one condones cheating and what it ultimately means for the affected students. That said, state and federal laws are specifically designed to unfairly label public schools as 'failing' when they do not meet certain standardized test scores while ignoring community issues such as poverty and racial isolation. Undue pressures placed on educators by these laws have created the circumstances in which it makes cheating more than likely rather than less likely to occur."
